Math is Fun
This is the message I've been attempting to send to students through use of manipulatives and a strategy that I call "Every Day Math". This is right in line with Georgia Math and Investigations. As students begin to discover that math is all around them and that they routinely use it in ways that they don't realize, they begin to feel confident and eager to learn. Math then becomes less scary and plenty fun. We use the standard curriculum, as well as technology to supplement and allow the skills to be practiced in a variety of ways. Math assessments are not done as often as Language Arts and reading. There is a pre-assessment before the introduction of a new unit, and a post-assessment once the unit is complete. Units take on average 4 weeks to complete. 1st semester began with two units of Numbers and Operations. We then moved to measurement and will end with data collection. 2nd semester will begin with multiplication, followed by fractions, and geometry. In March, we will begin reviewing all concepts taught and then we will end the year again with Numbers and Operations.
