Exceptional Children Services provide an emotionally supportive environment and uses
a variety of instructional models including multi-sensory, auditory, visual, and tactile. Technology is also used to supplement instruction.

Getting Hands on with Math.

Edgar Dale's Cone of Learning details how we learn. His model suggests that people tend to remember 90% of what we both say and do. Interactive activities and a variety of games are a regular part of all instruction at  New Prospect. In addition, New Prospect is a school where resources abound. Our students are fortunate to have access to a variety of professional services.

A holistic learning environment.

All of our students are active participants in the school environment which strives to offer many types of learning opportunities to address individual needs.  To the left, a student is shown requesting a book after participating in story time. These opportunities allows students to strengthen their expressive and receptive language skills. Below, students interact with science lab parent volunteer during an exercise on lighting and shadows.

READER'S THEATRE
The Reader's Theatre is a reading strategy to encourage

student's complete engagement in reading. It aids
comprehension, and fluency and provides children
with a lifetime memory. Left, a student shows off
her mask used in her role as the cat in the fictional
story The Bremen Town Musicians by Jacob
and Wilhelm Grimm.

Kinesthetic Activities

Some students learn best by moving and doing. Here students demonstrate classification using manipulatives.

LISTENING CENTERS

Picture

One way in which instruction is differentiated is by use of listening centers.  Students can listen to stories from their basal readers on audio. Oral readings can also be recorded. This allows students to monitor their fluency.

Through diligent work of leadership, staff and PTA,  New Prospect hosts an assortment of tools which translates into success for students who require access to supplemental instructional tools. My classroom has an "Electronic Writing Center'. With help from Fulton County Schools' Assistive Technology Department and the Occupational Therapy Department, the classroom is equipped with portable word processors, computer writing software, and overlays.  In addition, classroom computers are equipped with many educational programs which offer students additional opportunities to practice material presented in instruction and to sharpen their skills.  The student above is working on an Alpha Smart, a portable word processor.  Once the student has typed their information into the word processor, it can be uploaded to a desktop computer and prepared for publication.

Tips to Help Your Child Succeed

I only learned to swim as an adult. As a teenager, it was painful to watch others having fun splashing in the water during the summer time! As a beginner, it was not something that I enjoyed practicing. It was a struggle. This is how many struggling learners feel...like they're watching other have fun while they struggle from the sidelines. Homework can be a nightmare as it involves more practice. Learning and practicing new skills in the classroom is also difficult. Here are ways that may help your students jump in and get their feet wet:1) Set clear expectations. 2) Have a special time and place where homework begins. 3)Have a special place where books and other material are to be placed. 4) Check and sign their agenda daily. 5)Use your home environment to help them become excited about reading, and math by: A)Allowing them to read a newspaper, magazine, or recipe card to you B)Encouraging them to count cars and group them according to types or point out how addresses flow from greater than to less than when you're out in the neighborhood. C) Encouraging them to journal to tell you about their day-ask them to use words that provide detail. Lastly, it is so important that they read something every day. Our media center has something for everyone! In addition, Fulton County offers two libraries within minutes of our school. Also, all classrooms have mini libraries and resource material. We are more than happy to lend student's materials that will help to booster their skills.
